John Healy

John Healy, 87, peacefully passed away Sunday at 8:14 a.m. at his residence.

John was born May 24, 1927, in Daviess County, to Margaret (Brown) and Hugh Healy. He married Ida Mae (Matthewson) on Nov. 8, 1952, and she passed May 23, 1994. He then married Juanita (Stoll) Delaney on Jan. 6, 1996, and she passed June 11, 2014.

John is survived by his four children, John Michael (Lynn) Healy of Montgomery, Sharon Ann (Donald) Grindstaff of Washington, Daniel Joseph (Karen) Healy of Jasper, and Patricia Ann (William) O’Brian of Washington; grandchildren, Julie (Scot) Stewart, Brian (Jill) Colvin, Katie (Jeremy) Wininger, Aaron (Molly) Healy, Chris (Lisa) Donnersberger, Nick (Lindsey) Healy, Matt (Kera) Healy, Chris (Adrienne) Healy, Haley O’Brian, Zachary O’Brian, and Emily O’Brian; great-grandchildren, Jenna Stewart, Savannah Stewart, Mara Colvin, Graham Colvin, Nolan Wininger, Jillian Healy, Colson Healy, Luke Healy, Maggie Mae Healy, and are expecting one more this year; sisters, Betty Jean Henline of Florida, Maggie Craney of Montgomery, and Mary Jo Miller of Lafayette; also numerous nephews and nieces; and Juanita’s children, Karla Miller, Patty Edmiston, Michael Delaney, and Kevin Delaney.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ida Mae, Juanita, and brothers, Robert, Joe, Leo, and Donald, and also three infant children, Beverly Ann, Mary Margaret, and Paul.
John was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Montgomery. He graduated from Glendale High School in 1947. He served in the 769th Army Air Force Base Unit from 1945-1947. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He was a member of the Washington VFW, Washington American Legion, and Knights of Columbus. John was a member of the 3rd and 4th Degree K of C, where he ran the local Wednesday night bingo for many years and held the office of Grand Knight numerous times. He received the Laetare award in 1972. He was a St. Mary school board member and worked on many committees for St. Mary Church. John and Ida Mae were also chaperones for many CYO events that their children attended. He could also be found working the WCHS Cardinal basketball games. In his later years, John was the first resident commissioner for the Washington Housing Authority from 2001 through 2014. He worked for Breidenbaugh’s (Washington Concrete) for 34 years and retired from there as manager in 1988. After his retirement John enjoyed working for Pat’s Pre-Cast, O’Brian’s Produce and Super Wash Car Wash. John held the Washington City Council seat for District 5 on the Democrat ticket for 14 years until he retired from that position. John had a strong work ethic and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever needed.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Montgomery at 10 a.m. with Rev. James Koressel as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery, Washington, with military graveside rites by the Washington American Legion and VFW. Visitation will be Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
