Carts would need to adhere to several safety standards.
Under the ordinance, golf carts would need to display a city sticker, have tail lights, headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and display a red or orange flag 5 feet above the rear bumper. Drivers would have to have to be 16 years old and have a valid driver’s license. All passengers would have to be seated and wearing a seat belt. No child younger than 2 years old would be allowed on the golf carts. By state law golf carts will not be allowed to travel on National Highway, SR 57, or SR 257. They would also prohibited from using the intersections at at SR 57 and Highland Avenue, or the intersections with National Highway at Southeast 11th and South Meridian Streets. Golf carts owners will also have to carry insurance at the same level the state requires for other motor vehicles.
The Washington City Council heard the introduction of four other ordinances last night. Three of those set the 2017 pay scale for city employees and officials, a fourth ordinance was introduced to allow the City to refinance its sewage works revenue bonds.
Action on all those ordinances including the golf cart issue will be taken up again in two weeks.
