Vance Hays performs at the auditorium now named in his honor.
The Pike Central Middle and High School Auditorium was officially dedicated and renamed Vance Hays Auditorium over the weekend. He recently retired from teaching.
A group of Pike Central Alumni spanning the four-plus decades that Hays taught and led the choir and directed high school musicals performed music, skits and readings and an event Saturday night. At the end Hays was asked to come on stage and he played one of his favorite classical pieces on the piano. He then told the crowd one of his main goals was to let students know that the choir was where anybody could fit in whether they were singers, musicians, artists, athletes, nerds or wallflowers. He wanted it to be place where all could feel safe and comfortable. All those who performed said Hays was an influential part of their lives and he had a part in helping them achieve the success they’ve had. This present school year is the first year since the 1970’s that Hays was not at the choir’s helm
