Thursday is the deadline to sign up for health insurance through the federal exchange and be covered from the start of the year. You can sign up through the end of January, but there’ll be a one-month lag in coverage.
Congressional Republicans have vowed to repeal the health care law, but regional Health and Human Services director Kathleen Falk says the uninsured should still sign up. She says the insurers who are part of the federal exchanges have pledged to honor those policies through the end of 2017, no matter what the government does.
And the agency says despite a double-digit spike in premiums for next year, the increase in costs has stayed below the private market in three of the last four years.
Falk estimates 10-percent of Americans are still uninsured.
