(NETWORK INDIANA) You may not be shopping at K-Mart or Sears as much as you used to. Now more of those stores are closing, and that includes some in Indiana. The company that owns both stores, Sears Holding, of Illinois, announced 35 K-Marts and eight more Sears stores are closing across the country.
That includes the K-Mart in Anderson and Sears stores in Clarksville, Elkhart and Schererville.
Inside Indiana Business reports liquidation sales at the stores could start as early as Thursday.
Eddie Lampert, CED of Sears Holding Corp., said the closures are part of a strategic effort to “address losses from unprofitable stores and to reduce the square footage of other stores because many of them are simply too big for our current needs.”
“We have fought hard for many years to return unprofitable stores to a competitive position and to preserve jobs and, as a result, we had to absorb corresponding losses in the process,” said Lampert.
“So, it is obvious that we don’t make decisions to close stores lightly. Our efforts have been, and will continue to be, fact-based, thoughtful and disciplined, with the goal of making Sears Holdings more relevant and more competitive for our members and other constituents.”
The Schererville location is set to close in early August, the while remaining Indiana locations will close in early October. Sears Holdings did not immediately state how many Hoosier jobs would be affected, reported IIB.
