Susan K. Lehman, 70, Evansville, formerly of Vincennes, passed away at 10:16 am Monday July 24, 2017 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh.
Susan was born October 10, 1946 at Scott Air Force base, near Belleville, Illinois. Her father was in the Air Force and the family traveled in the U.S. and Okinawa. Her parents, Raymond and Augusta (Bass) Biggs preceded her in death.
Susan is survived by her husband, Larry Lehman; her daughter Hillery Koontz and her husband Patrick of Evansville; her son, Eric Lehman and his wife Beth of Evansville. She was so proud of what Hillery and Eric had achieved. She is also survived by her brother, Raymond Biggs and his wife Merlie; and a sister, Connie Donaldson and her husband David; and her four grandsons, Justin, Benjamin, Isaac, and J.P. Susan adored her grandsons and rarely missed a graduation, ballgame, play, concert, or special occasion.
She married Larry Lehman in 1977. She had worked several jobs, usually a secretary, but after the birth of her son Eric, she attended Vincennes University and traveled 120 miles round trip to attend Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. She graduated with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education. All her degrees were high honors. She then taught emotionally handicapped children at LaSalle Elementary School and the Willows Intensive Youth Services for 20 years. No other teacher could teach these students for more than a few years before they resigned. She did it for 20 years and really fought for these kids that many people had given up on.
She retired with her husband Larry in the year 2000. Her first grandson was born that year and she was off and running as a grandmother and enjoyed sewing. She made hand crafted Teddy Bears and was noted for her completely hand stitched baby blankets. She traveled all over southern Indiana attending craft shows. She also loved to shop at garden centers buying half dead flowers for her husband to plant.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 EDT pm Friday July 28, 2017 at Gardner Brockman Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm EDT. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Vincennes Humane Society. Online condolences may be made at www.gardnerbrockman.com
