Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum was obviously disappointed but still optimistic after learning yesterday that his city was not designated a Stellar Community by the state of Indiana.
A small crowd gathered at city hall and waited for the announcement yesterday afternoon according to the Vincennes Sun Commercial.
The six-year-old Stellar Community program is a multi-agency partnership designed to recognize smaller communities that have identified community and economic development projects and the next steps they need to take. Being designated a Stellar Community means millions in grants and tax credits.
Mayor Yochum says the team that worked on the initiative did an outstanding job and he’s proud of them and they are already getting to work on trying again next year.
Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch announced Wednesday that the Ohio River City of Madison and the northern Indiana town of Culver were selected from among six finalists. Both cities plan to use their grants for bike and pedestrian trail improvements. Madison will improve a riverfront park and Culver will focus on creating workforce housing and improving its western gateway into the town.
