The Washington Community School Board has approved advertising for bids for a new floor and bleachers at the Hatchet House. The floor is the gym’s original floor and has been sanded several times in it’s 51 year lifespan but now needs to be replaced. The bleachers need to become ADA compliant and have a designated handicapped area for wheel chairs. The Board was told the old floor would be preserved, and Superintendent Dr. Dan Roach said he hoped an organization would step forward and perhaps use the old floor as a potential fundraiser. The Hatchet House has been home to four state champions, four Mr. Basketball winners, and legendary players like Larry Bird, Damon Bailey, Steve Alford, and have played on its hardwood. It also was the location of President Richard Nixon’s first campaign speech on his run for the Presidency in 1968.
