“Unity” that’s the theme of today’s National Day of Prayer. Millions of Americans across all 50 states are gathering in churches, local businesses, the steps of city halls and courthouses, in schools, neighborhoods, and public gathering places for a day of public prayer. Today marks the 30th annual observance since President Ronald Reagan signed the amended law designating the first Thursday of May as a day of national prayer, and the 67th observance since the day was first created in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. The bible verse for this year’s theme is from Ephesians 4:3 which reads “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
In Washington the observance is at noon at the Daviess County Courthouse where governmental leaders, churches, families and others will offer prayers for schools, government, county residents and much more. The Rev. Christopher Byars will also present a special message on prayer.
In Petersburg, an observance will be at the courthouse at Noon. It will start with the Pike Central Swing Choir singing the National Anthem and then pastors from the community lead in various prayers.
