School Board hears updates about Envirothon and Hatchets Helping Hatchets

        

Washington’s School Board celebrated the success of Washington High School’s Academic Envirothon team at the regular board meeting.

  The WHS Envirothon team was a regional winner and just missed competing for the state title by one point.  The Envirothon is an academic competition in five science and environment related areas.   Team member Brady Turner  told the Board members the academic competition had affected his choice of college major a future career choice.  The Envirothon team is sponsored by WHS science teacher Elizabeth Schaffer.

Also last night  heard about the success of Hatchets Helping Hatchets. 

         The program is supported by student and community donation of school supplies, clothing, and other items that some students’ families may not be able to provide.   WHS teacher Barb Knepp told the board that students in need can apply anonymously for help.  Knepp said the program helps 2 or 3 students each week. 

           Hatchets Helping Hatchets President Lauren Andis said the program has been eye-opening and has given her the opportunity to share.  Knepp said the program has a partnership with St. Vincent DePaul to provide some of the things applying students may need.  

     

          Also at the meeting last night, the Board heard a concert from students from North and Griffith who are enrolled in the elementary ukulele program which was started in January.

     In personnel matters, the Board accepted resignations from NJROTC instructor, Capt, Neil May; elementary teacher Holly Farris, and WJHS Secretary, Lynn Goodwin.  The Board also approved hiring elementary teachers Beverly Bouchie, Kelsey Elsey, Amy Matheson, Jodie Neukam, Heath Snider, Brittany Walks, and Amie Weyer.  Also hired were High School English teacher Amanda Hannah, ELL teacher, Thomas McAlister, and business teacher Evan Stoll.  

Also, several coaching positions were approved and they include:

Boys and Girls Cross Country and Boys Track-Tim Baxter;

Boys Tennis-Jason Johnston;

Girls Tennis-Brian Hancock;

Volleyball-Brett Matheson;

Boys Soccer-Evan Stoll;

Girls Soccer-Cody Chapman;

Girls Golf-Morris Petty;

Boys Golf-Trey Miller;

Girls Basketball-Gretchen Miles;

Wrestling-Aaron Cissell;

Baseball-Steve Reed;

Softball-Aimee Farhar;

Girls Track-Kristin McGuire.
