St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Montgomery is celebrating 200 years this year. Some special events start Saturday in the Montgomery area.
The church has a special item to help celebrate. It’s the church bell that traveled with Father Edward Sorin of France in the 1800’s from Montgomery to South Bend where he established Notre Dame College. That college was going to be built here in Barr Township, however, the bishop of Vincennes opposed it because there was already a catholic college in Vincennes and he had been given 500 acres up north and instructed Sorin to build there.
Notre Dame recently re-recreated the trek Sorin took and through a series of discussions with Notre Dame officials when they were in the area, it was agreed to have the bell in Montgomery for a time. Mike Healy attends St. Peter’s. When he heard about the bell he thought it was a small bell that would fit in your hand. He saw pictures that told him different…
The bicentennial schedule for the weekend at St. Peter’s includes Mass Saturday at 5:30-pm and Sunday morning at 9:30-am. A euchre tourney Monday night, a 149th anniversary of the dedication of the current church on Wednesday night, a fish fry for Montgomery residents Friday night next week.
