A soldier from Washington was injured in Alaska Sunday, when a bear fell on him.
28-year-old William McCormick, formerly of Washington is in the army and based in Anchorage, Alaska. He was hunting with 19-year-old Zachary Tennyson near Carter Lake close to Moose Pass near Anchorage Sunday.
KTVA (www.ktva.com) in Alaska quoted state troopers who said Tennyson shot a bear above them on a ridge. The animal rolled down a slope and dislodged some rocks and McCormick was injured by the falling rocks and bear. The 200 pound black bear died in the incident. McCormick was flown from the scene to Providence Alaska Medical Center with what were described as life threatening injuries. At last report he was in serious condition Monday afterhoon.
McCormick and Tennyson both serve with the 4th Bridgade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division.
