Ann Elizabeth (Spencer) Couchenour, 75, of Vincennes, went to her Heavenly home to be with
Jesus at 11:29 PM Monday, October 15, 2018.
Ann was born on February 19, 1943 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes to Dr. Frederic
and Virginia (Anderson) Spencer. She was delivered by her father, Dr. Frederic Spencer.
She was director and teacher of Children’s Hour Nursery School. This school was the first in
the area to accept special needs children. She also owned and operated a bible bookstore, The
Master’s Cupboard, for several years. She continued her career in her father’s doctor’s office
as his receptionist until his retirement. Following this, she joined Dr. Phillip Shelton’s office and
served as a receptionist there, as well.
Ann’s true joy was caring for and helping others. She was a lifelong member of First United
Methodist Church where she was the United Methodist Youth Fellowship Director, Children’s
coordinator, volunteered on numerous committees, and served as a Sunday School teacher.
Ann was also active throughout our community. She was a leader for Brownies, Girl Scouts,
and Cub Scouts, enjoyed volunteering for events at the Knox County Public Library, and was an
active participant within the Southwest Indiana Walk to Emmaus community. She recently took a
position as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer. Ann’s greatest love was
working with children. She volunteered in the VCSC elementary schools and most recently at
South Knox Elementary School.
Ann was a Master Gardener and enjoyed belonging to the Purely for Pleasure Group.
She was a 1961 graduate of Lincoln High School, honored as the Homecoming Queen and was
also the Honored Queen for Job’s Daughters. She attended Ball State University.
Family was Ann’s top priority after her faith in God. Her dream was to be a wife, mother, and
Grammy.
Surviving are her husband, Paul B. Couchenour, whom she married on May 31, 1963; her four
children, Laura Anne (Couchenour) Garner and her husband Phil of Georgetown, Kentucky,
Jeffrey Spencer Couchenour of Vincennes, Suzanne Elizabeth (Couchenour) Corrona and her
husband Phil of Vincennes, David Paul Couchenour and his wife Betsy of Vincennes; her three
brothers, Steve Spencer and wife Sandy of Greenwood, Mike Spencer and his wife Paula of
Martinsville, and Jim Spencer and fiancee Kathy of Vincennes.
She was also survived by her nine grandchildren, Philip Spencer Garner, Paul Daniel Garner,
Savannah Elizabeth Corrona, Samuel Paul Corrona, Spencer Phillip Corrona, Simon Bendel
Corrona, Garrett Alexander Couchenour, Mykayla Elizabeth Couchenour, and Macie Rae
Couchenour. Her unconditional love and support for her grandchildren was evident by her
attendance at their many extra curricular events. She was Grammy to them and to many other
children.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, October 22, 2018 at First United Methodist
Church with Reverend Matt Swisher officiating. Burial will follow in the Memorial Park
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM Sunday, October 21, 2018 at the
church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VCSC ‘BIG A/little a’
mentorship program, South Knox Elementary School, or CASA.
