A new candidate added his name to the 2019 race for Mayor of Washington on Tuesday.
Don Williams, the city’s current building commissioner and former police officer, announced that he will run for the Republican nomination for Mayor in next year’s primary election.
Williams is the third Republican and fourth candidate overall to announce his plans to run for the Mayor’s seat after Washington’s popular Mayor, Joe Wellman, announced he would not seek re-election next year.
In a statement, Williams said that his five years working in the Building Commissioner’s office has given him a unique perspective in seeing business and industries inquiring about coming to Washington. Williams said economic expansion translates into more choices in jobs, opportunities for our youth, and a better tax base for the community. Williams said he wants to expand on the great work done by the present administration.
Williams joins, Republicans Diane Snyder and Jerry Sidebottom, and Democrat David Rhoads as declared candidates for Mayor in the 2019 elections. All four candidates are part of Mayor Wellman’s current administration.
Mayor Wellman has another year remaining on his current term but announced in November that he would not seek re-election.
