Martin County’s first female deputy is on the job.
Andrea Barrett was sworn in May 3rd. She told the Washington Times Herald she did not set out to be the first woman officer on the Sheriff’s Department but is excited for a chance to be a role model for several little girls who attended her swearing in.
Barrett, who grew up in Indy said she wrecked her first car as a teen and it was a policewoman who worked the incident. She says that officer was good to her and she wanted to be like her.
Sheriff Travis Rousch says they didn’t hire the best female for the job, but rather the best applicant for the job.
