Indiana State Police are investigating the theft of copper wire near the Greene/Sullivan County line.
It happened between midnight and 8-am on Friday’s date, May 31st. A 1000 foot wooden spool of copper wire was taken from the railroad tracks at State Road 54 just west of the Greene/Sullivan line. The spool has the name “Okonite” on it and has a black coating with white wrap and measures an inch to one-and-a-half inches in diameter. It weighs 2000 pounds and is valued at $8000.
The suspect is believed to have backed up to the railroad tracks, tied a chain to the spool and dragged it out onto the highway. There are gouge marks in the road to show the spool had been drug east and then loaded onto a trailer.
