Council approves several abatement renewals, but denies one initial request

The Washington City Council heard good economic news at a regular meeting last night as they examined the effect of city-granted tax abatement of local industries.   Mayor Wellman explains:

Meanwhile, the council did deny an abatement request from Wallick Properties.  They were looking to build an apartment complex with 60 units on the east side of town near Casey’s.  Councilman Doug Campton commented that if another entity wanted to come to town and only build 5 units would the council grant abatement.  He added he would be more in favor of the project if it were totally low income based.  The council voted unanimously to deny the abatement application.

In other action, the Council passed an ordinance rezoning a parcel of land behind the east side Casey’s at Monday evening’s meeting.   The parcel was rezoned from residential to commercial to match the rest of the property in the tract.   The Council also passed an ordinance appropriating Community Crossings Grant money for this year’s paving projects.
The Council also heard a complaint from local residents Jerry Ziegler and Bob Davis.  Ziegler and Davis are concerned about erosion and standing water on their properties caused by heavy rain runoff crossing Sugarland Road and Douglas Drive.   The City Engineer will look into the situation.
