Gary L. Johnson

Gary L. Johnson, 75, of Washington, passed away peacefully at Deaconess Gateway Hospital surrounded by family on Wednesday October 23, 2019.

He was born June 28, 1944, the fourth child of nine in Daviess County to Harold E. and Dorthy (Mathews) Johnson.

Gary had worked for SIGECO later known as Vectren, as a serviceman and retired as a construction foreman.  After retirement, he worked part-time at Taber Crane construction for many years. An avid golfer, Gary enjoyed going to the Master’s Tournament and going on golfing trips to Myrtle Beach and Florida with his friends.  His memberships included many golf courses in the area over the years along with the Elks, FOP, and the Moose.  Gary delighted in bragging about his grandchildren, having coffee at the Steamer and spending times with friends over dinner.

Surviving are his wife, Carol (Davis) Johnson, whom he married July 3, 1965; his son, Brent Johnson of Washington; daughter Shannon Lee and her husband Jerry and their children, Josh, Alex and Maggie of Washington;  Gary’s brothers and sisters, Barbara Atwood of Washington, Jim Johnson of Columbus, Don  (Sharon) Johnson of Washington, Judy (Larry) Sullivan of Washington, Georgia Howard of Washington, Jerry Johnson of Washington, and Cheryl Johnson of Washington; brothers-in-law Jim (Susan) Davis of Washington and Robert McCracken of Montgomery; along with several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.  Gary also loved his animal friends – Charlie, Jasmine, Daisy and Zoe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Harold “Sonny” Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, October 28, 2019 at First Christian Church in Washington with Byron Holtzclaw and Joe Coquillard officiating.  Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 am until service time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to First Christian Church. Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home is honored to assist Gary’s family with arrangements.
