The Knox County Council voted unanimously to create a new income tax to pay for an expansion of the Knox County Jail.
Officials say the expansion is needed as they are housing 270 inmates for a jail built for 200. Some of those are federal prisoners for which the county gets paid $50 per day for. The expansion will allow for more federal prisoners to be housed there.
The new tax is 2/10th of 1%. That amounts to about $90 per year per median income household in Knox County.
