It’s been announced that Gibson County Coal LLC will layoff nearly 200 workers. They have notified the state of Indiana they are shutting down production at the Gibson North Mine in Gibson County affecting 185 employees, mostly coal miners. The company is not saying if the layoffs affect the Gibson County South Mine located in Owensville.
A drop in coal production is to blame for the loss of jobs
Most of those losing their jobs work underground, according to the WARN notice to the state.
The layoffs will take place January 15. They will be permanent.
The company produced 1.7 million tons of coal through October of this year. Joseph Craft is the Chairman, President and CEO of the company and he says that they anticipate coal markets will improve but predicting when a rebound will occur is difficult and led to the actions. He added that until conditions improve, this production response allows for the adjustment of volume from the Gibson Complex to meet current demands at the lowest cost possible.
