US Senate update from Senator Todd Young

My Bill to Improve Maternal Health

Indiana has one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the country. Deploying life-saving telehealth services to areas that need them most will help save lives. That’s why I introduced the bipartisan Data Mapping to Save Moms’ Lives Act to require the Federal Communications Commission to connect broadband and health data, and improve the health and well-being of Hoosier families.
Fox 59 and WDRB covered my recent visit to Jeffersonville’s Clark Memorial Health Hospital where I discussed this bill.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will forever be remembered as a great American hero, a custodian of hope, and a man of peace who challenged our nation to love one another and live up to our founding principles. Along with countless others who bravely led the Civil Rights Movement, his words helped us become a more perfect union. This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I joined University of Indianapolis students and faculty for their Pack Away Hunger drive to feed neighbors in need.

USMCA Passes: A Win for American Workers and Farmers

Last week, I was proud to support the USMCA trade deal that passed the Senate in a 89-10 vote.
House Democrats held up USMCA for over a year. During that time, tens of thousands of Hoosier jobs supported by exports to Canada and Mexico were on the line. Last week, the Senate passed this historic trade agreement and marked a win for American workers, including Indiana’s farmers and manufacturers. This agreement is finally able to help modernize the outdated and unworkable North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and secure freer markets, fairer trade, and robust economic growth.

One Piece of the Affordable Housing Puzzle

America’s housing affordability crisis is complex, and there is no one solution that will ensure everyone has access to housing they can afford. But one potential solution is manufactured housing. Last week, I spoke at a manufactured housing show about my HUD Manufactured Housing Modernization Act, which will help state and local governments consider manufactured housing as a solution. Indiana leads the nation in construction of these homes, which are a viable alternative to traditional construction. Read more about my legislation here.

BONUS: On Friday, I also visited Guerin Woods in Georgetown, Indiana. This organization provides affordable housing and life skills training to Hoosiers in need.

Veterans and Motorcycles

It was too cold to ride in Indiana, but that didn’t stop the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association from having its annual meeting in Brown County this weekend. I had the opportunity to visit with the Indiana chapter on Friday to thank them for the work they do to lift up fellow veterans and to talk about how Congress is rallying around our service members as well.
One of my priorities in 2020 is passing my bill to give blind and disabled veterans access to TSA PreCheck for free. The men and women who have sacrificed their bodies in service to our country should not have to suffer the indignity of extensive searches at airport check points.
I also talked about how our office can provide constituent services to veterans who are having problems with the federal government. Watch the video below to see how we recently helped one Hoosier veteran.

Jobs Report Brings Good News for Hoosiers

Last week, I spoke about the recent jobs report from the U.S. Department of Labor that delivered more good news for the American economy. The unemployment rate held steady at 3.5 percent in December, 145,000 new jobs were added, and wages continued to grow.

The economic policies championed by President Trump and the Republican-led Senate are working for Hoosiers and for all American workers. We need to continue this momentum.
