There’s a full moon this Saturday July 4th. It’s not unusual as there is a full moon every 27.5 days. This one just happens to fall on July 4th. What is a little different is that it happens at the same time a partial lunar eclipse is due to occur. Those in North America will be able to see the Earth cast a shadow on the face of the moon for about 3 hours beginning around 11pm.
The full moon in July is known as the Buck Moon. Every full moon has a nickname corresponding with the season. The tradition of naming them can be traced back to Native Americans. July’s moon is named a Buck Moon after the new antlers that can be seen on young male deer this time of year. The June Moon is a Strawberry Moon, May is the Flower Moon, April is a Pink Moon and March a Snow Moon and sometimes called the Hunger Moon. Next month, the August full moon is known as the Sturgeon Moon. It’s named for the great number of the freshwater Sturgeon fish that could once be found in lakes and rivers in North America.
