The Barr Reeve middle school Varsity soccer team started on the road Saturday with a doubleheader. Barr Reeve claimed the first game win against the Pike Central chargers with a victory 6-2. In the second game for the Vikings against a fresh Tell City team, the Vikings fell short 7-4. They played well with more scoring opportunities and more possession in the second half. The Barr Reeve middle school Varsity team is on the road again Wednesday in Bloomfield with the game set to start at 6pm.
The Washington Hatchet Football team put on the pads and got a chance to scrimmage Saturday afternoon against North Posey at Hatchet Hollow. Fans were pumped at what they saw in the match up on Saturday. The Hatchet Football team kicks off the season Friday night at home against the Boonville Pioneers. The field for the Indianapolis 500 is set. Marco Andretti captured the pole position with a four-lap average of 231.068 miles per hour. He narrowly beat Scott Dixon’s time, who qualified at 231.051 miles per hour over the 10-mile run. The front row will be rounded out by 2017 “500” winner Takuma Sato. With no fans allowed inside due to COVID-19, a small number of fans congregated outside of the track to listen to the cars and watch a video board visible from 16th Street. The Indianapolis 500 will be run Sunday, August 23rd with the green flag at 2:30 p.m. Eastern.
Chase Elliott won in the NASCAR Cup Series at the Daytona International Speedway road course Sunday for his third consecutive win on a road course and second win this season. The race was the first Cup Series event on the Daytona road course. The Hendrick Motorsports star and two-time NASCAR Most Popular Driver led 34 of the 65 laps and held off Denny Hamlin after a restart with three laps to go for the victory. Martin Truex Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Chris Buescher rounded out the top five.
The Indiana Pacers begin the first round of the playoffs with Miami Heat Tuesday afternoon from the NBA’s “bubble” in Orlando. Pacers forward T.J. Warren is expected to play after sitting out the last two seeding games with plantar fasciitis. Despite only playing six games, Warren was named to the NBA All-Seeding Games First Team after averaging 31 points and six rebounds per game in Orlando. The Pacers finished the eight seeding games 6-2, including a 1-1 record against Miami.
The Cleveland Indians defeated the Detroit Tigers 8-5 Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park to sweep the three-game weekend series.
The Chicago White Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 7-2 Sunday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field. The White Sox became the 10th team in MLB history to hit four homers in a row.
On the north side of Chicago, the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Cubs 6-5 after taking the lead for good in the seventh inning. The Cubs have dropped two in a row, but still lead the National League Central by four games with a record of 13-5.
The Reds became the third Major League Baseball team to have games called off because one of its players tested positive for COVID-19. The last two games of a series between the Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates at Great American Ball Park were postponed Saturday after one Cincinnati player tested positive. The Reds have started the contact-tracing process to potentially isolate players who came into contact with the infected player. The team is likely to undergo increased testing beyond the standard every-other-day saliva test. MLB postponed the rest of the series seven hours before the scheduled first pitch on Saturday night. The Reds were optimistic about playing a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates today because both teams shared an off day, but that was called off yesterday afternoon.
