Indiana State Police responded to a vehicle vs pedestrian crash in Vincennes over the weekend. The crash happened at around 9:18pm Saturday night and involved a Vincennes Sheriff’s Department Deputy. The investigation revealed that the officer was responding to an accident on US 41 near Cottonwood Lane. The deputy was traveling south on 41 with activated emergency lights when a man wearing dark clothing walked from the median into the roadway. The deputy braked, but couldn’t avoid striking the man. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by the Knox County Coroner.
The male victim has been identified as 68-year-old Kenneth W. McGiffen of Vincennes. Police say Kenneth was traveling on US 41 when, for unknown reasons, he drove off the roadway and struck a tree and a fence. He left the scene and was attempting to cross the road when he was struck about a quarter mile from the original accident. The investigation is ongoing.
