The Indiana Hoosiers overcame multiple late-game deficits to defeat the Northwestern Wildcats 79-76 in double overtime Wednesday night in Evanston. The Hoosiers trailed by as many as 14, and went on a 7-0 run to force overtime after Al Durham’s floater with 24 seconds left tied the game. The Hoosiers closed overtime on a 6-0 run, capped off by a jumper just inside the arc from Durham with one second left. The senior guard finished with a career-high 24, and Armaan Franklin tied a career-best with 23 as IU handed the Wildcats their 10th straight loss. IU improved to 11-8 and will play at fourth-ranked Ohio State Saturday afternoon.
Purdue takes on Minnesota Thursday evening in Minneapolis as the Boilermakers look to bolster their NCAA Tournament resume. The 24th ranked Boilers are 13-7 overall and 8-5 in the Big Ten after a weekend win over Northwestern, while the Golden Gophers are 12-7 on the season and 5-7 in conference play. Purdue overcame a slow start and ran past Minnesota 81-62 less than two weeks ago at Mackey Arena behind a career-high 29 points from freshman Brandon Newman. The Gophers are favored by two points for Thursday’s 5 p.m. tipoff from “The Barn.”
The Indiana Pacers have lost four in a row after falling 104-94 to the Brooklyn Nets Wednesday night in New York. Indiana scored just 30 points in the first half and trailed by as many as 36 in the loss. The Nets entered play on a three-game losing streak and had given up 120 points or more in each of their previous five games before holding the Pacers to their lowest output of the season. The Pacers have dropped six out of seven to fall to 12-13. The Blue and Gold are back in action Thursday night at division foe Detroit.
Hendrick Motorsports swept the front row for Sunday’s Daytona 500 after qualifying for NASCAR’s biggest event Wednesday night. Alex Bowman will lead the field to green from the pole position for the second time in his career with William Byron starting on the outside of the front row. Bowman moved over from the number 88 car to the number 48 Ally Chevy after seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson retired following last season. The rest of the field for Sunday’s race will be set by a pair of 60-lap qualifying heat races Thursday night on the 2.5 mile oval.
