The NTT IndyCar Series opens the 2021 season Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park outside of Birmingham, Alabama. The 24-car field features five former series champions, including six-time and defending series champ Scott Dixon. No race was held at Barber in 2020 due to the pandemic, and in 2019, Takuma Sato won from the pole. The IndyCar rookie class has an impressive amount of experience. NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson will make his IndyCar debut for Chip Ganassi Racing, while F1 veteran Romain Grosjean will compete for Dale Coyne Racing with Rick Ware Racing in his first IndyCar event. Additionally, former Australian Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin will compete for Team Penske in his first full-time season. The Cleveland Indians defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-2 Thursday at Guaranteed Rate Field to split the four-game series. Cleveland begins a weekend set with the Reds tonight in Cincinnati, while the White Sox are off to Boston to face the Red Sox. In the only other game involving an area team, the Oakland Athletics defeated the Detroit Tigers 8-4.
The Indiana Pacers continue their three-game road trip Friday afternoon against the league-best Utah Jazz. Indiana has won four in a row on the road after beating the Houston Rockets Wednesday, but the Jazz present a different challenge. Utah is 41-14, best in the NBA, and the Jazz are 25-3 at home.
