The Washington Hatchet Golf Team finished 7th in the field of 20 teams Saturday at the Washington Invitational at Country Oaks. Evansville North was the champion with a 299 on the day. The Hatchets ended the day carding a 339 with Dominic DePass finishing with 80, and Zach Gray 83. Barr Reeve ended the day at 352, and Washington Catholic 433.
The 2021 NTT IndyCar Series season began Sunday with a first time winner. Alex Palou (PUH-low) held off a pair of IndyCar greats to win the season opener at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama in dominating fashion. The 24-year-old Spaniard was fast all weekend in the number 10 Honda and started third. Palou spent his rookie season with Dale Coyne Racing with Team Goh before coming over to Chip Ganassi Racing in a surprise move over the offseason. The move paid immediate dividends, as Palou utilized a two pit stop strategy and led 56 of 90 laps at the picturesque road course outside of Birmingham. Will Power finished less than half of a second behind in second, while Palou’s Ganassi teammate Scott Dixon rounded out the podium in third.
Alex Bowman took the lead late and went on to win in the NASCAR Cup Series Sunday at Richmond Raceway. The driver of the number 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy passed Denny Hamlin with 10 to go at the 3/4ths of a mile D-shaped oval. The win was Bowman’s third of his career, and he is the eighth different winner in nine races so far this season. Hamlin finished second in his FedEx Toyota that honored the eight people killed in a shooting at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis Thursday night.
The Atlanta Braves crushed four home runs in the first inning off of Chicago starter Kyle Hendricks, and the Braves went on to beat the Cubs 13-4 Sunday night at Wrigley Field. In Boston, the Chicago White Sox swept a seven inning doubleheader with a 3-2 win in game one and a 5-1 victory in the second game. The Cleveland Indians doubled up the Cincinnati Reds 6-3, while the Oakland Athletics walked off the Detroit Tigers 3-2 to sweep the four-game series. Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout as Philadelphia blanked the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0.
