Jesse Winker hit three home runs and drove in six, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-7 Sunday at Busch Stadium. It was the second time this season that Winker has homered three times, and Cincinnati completed the four-game sweep of its division rival. Winker’s third homer of the day was a solo shot to right field that broke a 7-all tie in the top of the ninth and proved to be the winning run. Cincinnati had not swept the Cardinals in a four-game set in 21 years. Winker is tied for the National League lead with 17 long balls.
Patrick Wisdom homered twice, and the Chicago Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants 4-3 to avoid a sweep. Wisdom has seven big flies in 13 games so far this season. Kyle Hendricks picked his fifth straight victory after giving up three runs in six and a third innings. The Cubs avoided a four-game sweep with the victory, and head south to take on the San Diego Padres Monday night.
Kyle Larson held off his teammate Chase Elliott on multiple late race restarts and went on to win at Sonoma Raceway in the NASCAR Cup Series. Larson swept both stages en route to a dominating third victory of the season and second in a row. The California native has finished second or better in five straight races, and is tied with Martin Truex Jr. for the most wins in the Cup Series this season. Truex Jr., Joey Logano and Kyle Busch rounded out the top five. Larson grew up in Elk Grove, a suburb of Sacramento about 80 miles from the hilly road course in wine country. With Elliott finishing second, it was the fourth straight 1-2 finish for Hendrick Motorsports, tying a record set in 1956.
