Baseball Semi State:
Southridge topped Brebeuf 4 to 2 to move on for the 3A State Championship. Jasper also advanced with a huge win in the 4A Semi State 17 to 2. Jasper will now face Fishers next Tuesday, June 22nd at Victory Field at 8pm. Southridge will face Hanover Christian at 4pm next Tuesday.
Washington will host the Bobcat of Daviess County Girls Basketball Shootout on Thursday. Teams competing include Washington, Bedford North Lawrence, Mooresville, Gibson Southern, Evansville Memorial, Silver Creek, North Harrison, and Franklin. Washington Varsity will play at the Hatchet House at 10:30 – 1:00 – 4:00. The Washington JV plays at Griffith Elementary at 10:30 – 12:30. Cost for admission is $5.00 for the day – children 18 and under in for Free.
For the first time in 2021, IndyCar has a repeat winner. Pato O’Ward pulled off a daring pass of Josef Newgarden and pulled away for the win in Race 2 of the Detroit Grand Prix doubleheader at Belle Isle Park. Colton Herta appeared to be in the catbird seat as he chased down Newgarden in the final laps, but a pair of late race cautions bunched the field up. O’Ward restarted fifth with seven laps to go and sliced his way through the field. The 22-year-old Mexican Arrow McLaren SP star passed Newgarden with three to go and went on to win by nearly seven seconds. Newgarden led all but the final three laps, and the Team Penske driver held off Alex Palou and Herta on worn tires to finish second. O’Ward now leads the championship standings by a single point as IndyCar heads to Road America next weekend.
With one million dollars on the line, Kyle Larson held off Brad Keselowski to win the NASCAR All-Star Race Sunday night at Texas Motor Speedway. Larson entered Sunday having won the last two points races, and beat Keselowski in a 10-lap duel to the finish. He won the All-Star race in 2019, and became the eighth driver in NASCAR history to win multiple All-Star events.
Zach Davies struck out six over six and two thirds shutout innings, and the Chicago Cubs defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 to complete a three-game sweep Sunday night at Wrigley Field. The Cubs did all their scoring in the third inning, and both runs were unearned. The Cubs have won 15 out of 20 and stayed tied with the Milwaukee Brewers atop the NL Central.
The Cincinnati Reds finished off a series sweep of the Colorado Rockies with a 6-2 victory Sunday at Great American Ball Park. Eugenio Suarez hit a two-run home run in the second, and Jesse Winker connected on a two-run double in the seventh, as the Reds improved to 32-31. Cincinnati has won 10 out of 13 and is over .500 for the first time since April 21st.
Notre Dame baseball will play for a trip to the College World Series Monday night. The 10th ranked Fighting Irish beat number seven Mississippi State 9-1 Sunday to force a winner-take-all Game 3 in the NCAA Super Regional.
