The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 in 10 innings to win their fifth straight. The game was scoreless heading into extras, and with the bases loaded in the top of the 10th, Eugenio (ay-you-HAY-nee-oh) Suarez was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run of the game. Kyle Farmer followed with a sac fly to give the Reds an insurance run. In New York, Taijuan Walker struck out 12 and the Mets beat the Cubs 3-2. Paul Goldschmidt hit a walk-off home run as the Cardinals won 2-1 over the Marlins.
The Chicago White Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 Tuesday night to even the series between the teams with the two best records in baseball. Dallas Keuchel improved to 6-1 after striking out five over seven four-hit innings. Cleveland kept pace in the AL Central with a 7-2 win over Baltimore. In Kansas City, Miguel Cabrera had two hits and the Tigers beat the Royals 4-3 to give the Royals their fifth straight loss.
The state of Indiana will be well-represented in swimming at the Olympics later this summer in Tokyo. IU grad Lilly King will attempt to defend her gold medal in the 100-meter breaststroke after recording the fastest time in the U.S. Olympic swimming Trials in Omaha. Carmel High School picked up its first-ever Olympic swimmers. Drew Kibler finished third in the 200-meter freestyle and will participate in the 800-meter freestyle relay in Tokyo. Minutes later, Jake Mitchell qualified in the 400-meter freestyle with a dramatic swim by himself. The 19-year-old recorded a time of 3 minutes, 45.8 seconds, which was just over one second better than the time he needed to beat.
The Indiana Fever have lost eight in a row after falling to the Seattle Storm 87-70 Tuesday night at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum. The Fever were led by Kelsey Mitchell’s 26 points, and dropped to 1-12 with the loss. Indiana shot 3-for-17 from 3-point range. The two teams will rematch Thursday night in Indianapolis.
IndyCar driver Rinus VeeKay suffered a broken clavicle in a bicycle accident Monday. According to his Ed Carpenter Racing team, VeeKay underwent successful surgery and will miss this weekend’s race at Road America. Oliver Askew will fill in in the number 21 Chevy. The injury occurred on a cycling trail during a training ride, and the team said VeeKay is in good spirits and has no other injuries. The 20-year-old Dutch driver is fifth in the point standings.
Purdue basketball picked up a commitment from Minnesota small forward Camden Heide Tuesday. The 6-foot-5 Heide is the 65th ranked rising high school senior in the country, according to 247 Sports. He is Purdue’s third commitment in the class of 2022, joining Homestead’s Fletcher Loyer and Westfield’s Braden Smith. The talented shooter picked the Boilermakers over offers from schools such as Arizona, Creighton, Iowa and Minnesota.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced that next month’s NASCAR Cup race at the track will be named the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard. For the first time, the Cup Series will compete on the IMS road course after the Brickyard 400 had been held on the famed 2.5 mile oval since 1994. The Verizon 200 at the Brickyard on August 15th will be the crown jewel of a triple-header weekend, with IndyCar and the NASCAR Xfinity Series racing on the road course Saturday.
