Alex Palou blew by Josef Newgarden on a restart with two to go and went on to win in the IndyCar Series at Road America for his second victory of the season. Newgarden dominated from the pole position and led 32 of the 55 laps and looked to be on his way to victory before suffering gearing issues on the final restart. Palou became the second two-time winner of the season and regained the points lead from ninth place finishing Pato O’Ward. Colton Herta came home second and Will Power finished third, while Newgarden plummeted to 21st.
Alec Mills pitched five shutout innings and the bullpen took it the rest of the way, and the Chicago Cubs blanked the Miami Marlins 2-0 Sunday at Wrigley Field. With the win, the Cubs avoided a three-game sweep after being outscored 21-3 Friday and Saturday. The St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves split a seven inning doubleheader Sunday. The Cards took Game 1 9-1 behind a complete game three-hitter from Adam Wainwright. In Game 2, Ronald Acuna Jr. homered in the third to lead Atlanta to a 1-0 win.
The San Diego Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 Sunday in San Diego to complete a four-game sweep. The Padres got all three runs in the third on a Wil Myers two-run triple. Myers then scored on a throwing error by Votto. Elsewhere in the big leagues, the Astros finished off a four-game sweep of the White Sox with an 8-2 win in Houston. Cleveland is now 2.5 games back of Chicago in the American League Central after a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh, and the Tigers defeated the Angels 5-3 in 10 innings.
For the fourth week in a row, Kyle Larson ended up in victory lane in the NASCAR Cup Series. Larson dominated at Nashville Superspeedway for his third win in a row in a points-paying race in addition to last week’s victory in the All-Star exhibition event. The Hendrick Motorsports star led 264 of 300 laps at the 1.33-mile concrete oval 35 miles from downtown Nashville. It was the first Cup race at the 20-year-old track, and the first in the Music City market since 1984. Ross Chastain finished second with William Byron third in front of a sold-out crowd of about 40,000.
