Two high school baseball state champions were crowned Monday night in the IHSAA State Finals at Victory Field. In Class 1A, Washington Township defeated Shakamak 6-0 to earn the school’s first ever title in any sport. In the 2A championship, Providence beat Eastside 4-0. It marked the second baseball crown for the Catholic high school in Clarksville.
In Class 3A, Hanover Central takes on Southridge at 5 p.m. Eastern. Tune in for live coverage tonight. Should be a great match-up from Indianapolis. Live coverage starts at 5pm on the General 95.9 / 101.3fm WAMW. The 4A championship features Fishers against Jasper with a first pitch at 8 p.m.
The Indiana Pacers coaching search is heating up. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the team is beginning interviews this week in Chicago, including Steve Clifford, Brian Shaw and Terry Stotts. Clifford has eight years of NBA head coaching experience and spent the last three seasons with the Orlando Magic. Shaw is a former Pacers assistant and is currently the head coach of the NBA G League Ignite team. Stotts hails from Bloomington and just wrapped a nine-year stint as the Trail Blazers coach. The Blue and Gold failed to make the playoffs and fired Nate Bjorkgren after one season.
The NTT IndyCar Series announced Monday it will not replace the canceled race on the streets of Toronto and that the 2021 schedule will stay at 16 races. Honda Indy Toronto was scheduled for July 11th, but was called off last month due to COVID-19 restrictions in Canada. Seven races remain this season, and IndyCar returns to action July 4th at Mid-Ohio.
The Cleveland Indians defeated the Chicago Cubs 4-0 Monday night at Wrigley Field. Cleveland starter Aaron Civale left the game in the fifth inning with an injured middle finger on his pitching hand, adding another injury to an Indians starting rotation already depleted by injuries. In Minneapolis, Miguel Sano hit a walk-off, two-run home run and the Twins defeated the Reds 7-5 in 12 innings. Cincinnati took a 5-3 lead in the 10th before a Sean Doolittle blown save extended the game.
