The IHSAA baseball State Finals concluded Tuesday night at Victory Field with the 3A and 4A championship games, and it was a banner night for Dubois County. In Class 3A, Southridge defeated Hanover Central 2-0 for the school’s first baseball title after heartbreaking losses in the state finals in 2018 and 2019. In the largest class, Jasper defeated Fishers 3-1. It was the sixth baseball championship in school history and the first in class 4A for the Wildcats.
The Indiana Pacers will pick 13th in next month’s NBA Draft after the draft lottery Tuesday night. The Blue and Gold had just under a five percent chance of jumping up into the top four and over a 90 percent chance of ending up with the 13th pick. That slot has been lucky for teams in the recent past, including the Suns selecting Devin Booker in 2015 and the Jazz taking Donovan Mitchell in 2017. The team’s representative at the lottery was Nancy Leonard, the widow of Slick Leonard and former team executive who helped save the franchise with a telethon in 1977. The Detroit Pistons will pick number one overall on July 29th.
Kyle Hendricks won his eighth consecutive start and the Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians 7-1 at Wrigley Field. Hendricks gave up four hits over six shutout innings to improve to 10-4 on the season. Kris Bryant opened the scoring with a solo home run in the fourth before the Cubs broke it open with four runs in the sixth. In Minneapolis, Tyler Naquin homered in the top of the ninth, and the Reds snapped a five-game losing streak with a 10-7 win over the Twins. Brownsburg native Tucker Barnhart went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a solo home run.
The Detroit Tigers got three runs batted in from both Jonathan Schoop and Jake Rogers en route to an 8-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday at Comerica Park. In Pittsburgh, the Pirates scored four runs in the seventh inning and beat the White Sox 6-3. Chicago took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh on a three-run home run from pinch-hitter Yasmani Grandal before a disastrous bottom of the inning. The White Sox have lost five in a row.
