Notre Dame alum Trey Mancini came up just short and finished as the runner up in MLB’s Home Run Derby at Coors Field in Denver. The Orioles standout hit 22 home runs in the final round, but was eclipsed by Mets star Pete Alonso’s 23 homers. The 29-year-old Mancini missed all of last season while battling colon cancer. The MLB All-Star Game is Tuesday night in Denver. Two Indiana natives will suit up for the American League. Chicago White Sox pitcher and Indianapolis native Lance Lynn is joined by Greenfield native and Texas Rangers star Kyle Gibson on the AL roster.
A number of prospects with Indiana ties were selected in the MLB Draft Monday. IU pitcher McCade Brown was taken in the third round by the Colorado Rockies. Fellow Hoosiers hurler Gabe Bierman was picked in the seventh round by the Miami Marlins. In the 10th round, two more IU pitchers were selected. The Red Sox drafted Dyer native Matt Litwicki, while Carmel native Tommy Sommer went to the White Sox. Purdue Northwest standout Chad Patrick went to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fourth round, and Ball State pitcher Chayce McDermott was taken by the Astros. Notre Dame had one player selected, as pitcher Tanner Kohlhepp got drafted by the Tigers in the fifth round.
Notre Dame picked up a commitment from one of the top linebackers in the country Monday. South Carolina native Jaylen Sneed committed to play for Brian Kelly and the Fighting Irish. Sneed is ranked the 70th best player in the class of 2022, according to the 247 Sports Composite Ranking. The 6-foot-2, 210 pound Sneed is Notre Dame’s 18th commit for the class of 2022, and he committed to the Fighting Irish over Oregon, and Notre Dame’s class is currently ranked the second best in the country.
Indiana football’s recruiting momentum continued Monday when the Hoosiers received a commitment from Fort Wayne Snider offensive lineman Demon “D.J.” Moore. The 6-foot-5, 315 pound Moore is considered the 15th best interior line prospect in the country, according to the 247 Sports Composite ranking. He picked IU over offers from schools such as Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State and Purdue. Moore is the 12th commitment for the rising senior class, which is currently ranked the 20th best in the nation according to 247 Sports.
