Carlos Rodon threw a 1-hit gem and the Chicago White Sox beat the Houston Astros 4-0 to take their first series after the All-Star break. The Cincinnati Reds fell to the Milwaukee Brewers for the third time in as many nights, this time by a score of 8-0. The Detroit Tigers also completed a sweep of the Minnesota Twins with a 7-0 win behind seven innings of shutout pitching from Wily Peralta. The St. Louis Cardinals picked up their second straight win against the Giants in 2-1 fashion while the Cleveland Indians beat the A’s behind two runs in the last three innings to win 4-2. The Chicago Cubs failed to complete the sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 6-4 loss.
The Indiana Pacers officially announce the hiring of four assistant coaches that will join Rick Carlisle on the sidelines. The blue and gold hired Lloyd Pierce, Ronald Nored, Mike Weinar and Jenny Boucek. Nored, a former Butler basketball star, was on the coaching staff for the Charlotte Hornets before coming to Indianapolis. Weiner and Bouceck were both on Carlisle’s coaching staff in Dallas and made the move with him to Indianapolis.
Aric Almirola is a NASCAR Cup Series winner in 2021 after winning the Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Almirola won, in part, due to a collection of crashes at the beginning of the race. Rain fell earlier in the day and overcast skies threatened more rain as the green flag was waived. On lap six, water hit the track again and the wet surfaces caused leaders Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. to crash and end their days early.
Behind an eight-run sixth inning, the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Omaha Storm Chasers 12-5 at Victory Field in downtown Indianapolis. Four different Indians players drove in at least two runs led by Bligh Madris’ grand slam in the bottom of the sixth. Cedar Rapids put up eight runs in the top of the fourth inning with a grand slam to beat the South Bend Cubs by a score of 13-3. The Fort Wayne TinCaps followed the trend of single-inning explosions scoring six runs in the top of the fifth inning beating the West Michigan Whitecaps 9-2.
