The Olympics are well underway in Tokyo and Hoosiers have already made a big footprint on the summer games. Carmel swimmer Jake Mitchell qualified for the 400-meter freestyle final on Saturday night finishing eighth with a time of 3:45:39. On Monday morning in Tokyo, Sunday night in Indianapolis, Lily king lost a 100m breaststroke race for the first time since December 2015 but qualified for the final. In the men’s 4-by-100 freestyle relay, Hoosiers Blake Pieroni and Zach Apple carried Team USA to a gold medal with a time of 3:08.97. In cycling, Marian’s Coryn Rivera finished seventh in the road race on Sunday in Japan and Brownsburg’s Chloe Dygert finished 31st. As of early Monday morning in Indianapolis, the United States was second in the total medal standings with 13 behind China’s 15 and tied for first in gold medals with six so far at the Tokyo Games.
The White Sox scored three runs in the top of the second inning and Indianapolis’ Lance Lynn threw six innings of one-run baseball as Chicago beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1. The St. Louis Cardinals also avoided a sweep in Cincinnati defeating the Reds by a score of 10-6. The Cleveland Indians bounced back from an 8-2 loss beating the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Salvador Perez had three RBI’s for the second straight night as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 6-1. The Chicago Cubs got back-to-back home runs in the first inning from Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo propelling Chicago to a 5-1 victory.
The Indianapolis Indians lost 7-3 tot he Toledo Mud Hens. Toledo scored five runs in the first two innings digging a hole the Indians could not climb out of. All three runs for the Indians came from the bottom three hitters in the batting order. In High-A ball, the Dayton Dragons scored three runs in the first inning ultimately defeating the Fort Wayne TinCaps 5-3. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers held the South Bend Cubs to just three hits across nine innings shutting out the Cubs to win 3-0.
Almost exactly three months after being drafted, the Indianapolis Colts rookies reported to training camp at Grand Park Sports Campus on July 24. The rest of the veterans on the blue and white roster will report to training camp on July 27. Wednesday, July 28 will be the first practice that is open to fans followed by 18 other open practices throughout the duration of training camp.
