Indianapolis Colts players officially reported to training camp Tuesday at Westfield’s Grand Park. They will take the field Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. for the first practice of the season. Wide receiver Parris Campbell said he’ll be full-go to start camp after missing most of last season with a knee injury. Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner said Tuesday that his personal goal is to win Defensive Player of the Year and that he believes the Colts have the defense necessary to win the Super Bowl.
IU divers Michael Hixon and Andrew Capobianco won the silver medal in the men’s synchronized three-meter springboard at the Olympics in Tokyo. The American duo finished second in the event to China. Carmel’s Drew Kibler and IU grad Zach Apple helped the United States to a fourth place finish in the men’s 4-by-200 freestyle relay final. It was the first time in Olympic history that Team USA did not medal in a men’s swimming relay event. Brownsburg native and Marian University’s Chloe Dygert finished seventh in the individual time trials in road cycling.
The Crossroads Classic is likely coming to an end, according to a report from the Lafayette Journal and Courier. The annual four-team basketball event at Bankers Life Fieldhouse featuring Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame and Butler began in 2011. After this year’s pair of games on December 18th, the programs will go their separate ways. According to Mike Carmin of the Journal and Courier, Purdue athletic director Mike Bobinski said that IU and Notre Dame did not want to renew the agreement, and that Purdue is in search of another marquee non-conference game, potentially in Indianapolis.
The Indiana Pacers hosted Alex Antetokounmpo as part of their final pre-draft workout ahead of Thursday’s NBA Draft. Alex is the brother of Milwaukee Bucks star and NBA Finals MVP Giannis. The 19-year-old small forward went to high school in Wisconsin, but played last year for UCAM Murcia CB in Spain. The 6-foot-8 Alex is the youngest of four Antetokounmpo brothers, and all three of his older brothers have won NBA titles. The Blue and Gold hold three picks in Thursday night’s draft.
Joey Votto homered twice to continue his red-hot week, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 7-4 at Wrigley Field. Votto crushed a solo long ball in the first, along with Jesse Winker, and the Reds took an early 2-0 lead. The early advantage quickly evaporated when Anthony Rizzo tied the game with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the first. Kyle Farmer helped Cincinnati regain the lead with an RBI single in the second, before Votto added another solo blast in the third. In Cleveland, Adam Wainwright struck out eight over seven innings, and the Cardinals defeated the Indians 4-2. Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, Paul DeJong put St. Louis on top for good with a two-run home run.
Eloy Jimenez is back. In his second game of the season, the Chicago White Sox slugger crushed a three-run, go-ahead home run with two outs in the eighth inning to lift the Sox to a 5-3 comeback win over the Kansas City Royals. Jimenez returned to the lineup Monday after suffering a pectoral injury in Spring Training. Tuesday night, the 24-year-old went 2-for-4, including his 459-foot home run to left center field that completed a four-run eighth inning. Miguel Cabrera had an RBI single in the top of the 11th, and the Detroit Tigers defeated the Minnesota Twins 6-5.
