Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz will miss approximately five to 12 weeks after undergoing foot surgery Monday. Coach Frank Reich said there was a loose broken bone in Wentz’s left foot from an injury he suffered in high school. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Wentz has not been ruled out for Week 1 of the regular season, but that could be optimistic. Wentz will rest for two weeks before beginning rehab. If he were to be out the full 12 weeks, he would miss seven regular season games. In the meantime, the Colts will hand the offense over to second-year QB Jacob Eason.
NBA free agency began Monday evening, and the Indiana Pacers were busy. The Blue and Gold will sign Torrey Craig to a two-year deal worth 10 million dollars, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The 30-year-old former Suns forward averaged 5.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game last season. Indiana also plans to re-sign point guard T.J. McConnell to a four-year contract worth 35.2 million dollars, according to ESPN. Sharp shooting forward Doug McDermott agreed to a three-year deal with 42 million dollars with the San Antonio Spurs after three seasons in Indy.
A pair of former Indiana Mr. Basketball winners have new teams. Washington native and former IU big man Cody Zeller will sign a one-year deal with the Portland Trail Blazers. The 29-year-old native has spent his entire career in Charlotte since being drafted fourth overall in 2013. Last season, he averaged 9.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Indianapolis Tech grad Trey Lyles agreed to a two-year contract with the Detroit Pistons worth five million dollars. The 26-year-old averaged five points per game in 23 games with the Spurs last season.
Indianapolis native Cole Hocker advanced to the men’s fifteen hundred meter semifinals at the Tokyo Olympics Monday. The Cathedral High School grad and current University of Oregon runner needed to finish in the top six in his heat and came home fourth. The 20-year-old Hocker finished in a time of just over three minutes and 36 seconds; 16 hundredths of a second behind the winner of the heat. Notre Dame’s Yared Nuguse dropped out with a strained quadriceps. The semifinals in the fifteen hundred meter begin Thursday morning.
Jose Ramirez crushed a two-run home run in top of the tenth inning, and the Cleveland Indians went on to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2 in Canada. The Indians’ were the only region team in action Monday, but there is a full slate of games Tuesday. At 7:10 p.m. Eastern, Detroit hosts Boston, and the Reds welcome Minnesota to Cincinnati. The White Sox take on Kansas City in Chicago at 8:10. Jon Lester will make his Cardinals debut as St. Louis takes on Atlanta at 8:15, and the Cubs head to Colorado to play the Rockies at 8:40.
