Indianapolis Colts All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson underwent foot surgery Tuesday and will be sidelined between five and 12 weeks. The surgery took place exactly one day after quarterback Carson Wentz had the same procedure done, and the injury has the same timeline for a return. Coach Frank Reich said that Wentz’s surgery was successful and that there were no complications. Nelson has not missed a game in three seasons after being drafted sixth overall by Indy in 2018. The 25-year-old Notre Dame product is one of just five players since 1970 to be named an All-Pro in each of his first three seasons.
A former part-time IndyCar team is coming back to the series full-time next season. Juncos Racing (HOON-kos) will return to the paddock as Juncos Hollinger Racing in 2022. The team will also compete in the final three races of this season, starting September 12th at the Grand Prix of Portland with a driver to be announced at a later date. In 2019, the team shocked the racing world when Kyle Kaiser bumped two-time Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso from the Indianapolis 500 field.
Former Colts quarterback Philip Rivers said he has not ruled out a return to the NFL. The 39-year-old retired after last season and is coaching high school football in his home state of Alabama. Rivers told Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times he is going to stay ready in case a team wants to sign him for a late season run. He helped lead Indianapolis to a playoff appearance in 2020 following 16 seasons with the Chargers. Colts signal caller Carson Wentz is out five to 12 weeks after undergoing foot surgery Monday.
Elkhart native and former Purdue volleyball star Annie Drews helped lead the United States to a quarterfinal victory over the Dominican Republic early Wednesday morning in the Tokyo Olympics. Team USA will play either Italy and Serbia in the semifinals early Friday morning. On the basketball court, Notre Dame alums Skylar Diggins-Smith and Jewell Loyd played limited minutes as Team USA secured a dominating 79-55 quarterfinal win over Australia. The Americans remained undefeated and will take on Serbia in the semifinals early Friday.
The Reds bullpen struggled once again, and the Minnesota Twins scored three runs in the top of the ninth to beat Cincinnati 7-5 Tuesday night at Great American Ball Park. Jorge Polanco hit a three-run homer off of Heath Hembree to give the Twins the lead for good. Brownsburg native Tucker Barnhart was one of three Reds to hit a home run. Cincinnati did not lose any ground in the NL Central race. The Atlanta Braves scored five runs in the first inning and cruised to a 6-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. In Denver, the Rockies ran past the Cubs 13-6.
Dylan Cease had a masterful performance to help lead the Chicago White Sox to a 7-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals Tuesday night in Chicago. Cease struck out 11 Royals and only allowed one hit over six shutout innings. Tim Anderson had three hits and three RBI, including a two-run home run. Elsewhere in the American League Central, Detroit beat Boston 4-2 thanks in part to Miguel Cabrera’s 498th career home run. Chicago’s lead in the division is up to nine and a half games after Zach Plesac struggled for Cleveland and the Indians fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2.
