Tyler Naquin homered twice, including an insurance long ball in the eighth, as Cincinnati completed a four-game sweep. Coupled with the Padres loss, the Reds now have a one-game lead for the second and final National League Wild Card spot. Adam Wainwright continued to own the Pirates, as the Cardinals defeated Pittsburgh 3-0. Wainwright allowed two hits over eight innings while striking out nine and walking none. He has won seven straight decisions against the Pirates. In Chicago, the Cubs dropped their franchise-record 13th straight at Wrigley Field in a 9-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals.
Ryan Blaney took the lead on a restart with eight laps to go, and held off multiple challengers to win in the NASCAR Cup Series at Michigan International Speedway. Blaney got a push from Kyle Busch on the final restart and held off William Byron by less than a tenth of a second. It was his sixth career victory and first at the 2-mile oval in Brooklyn, Michigan. The win completed a weekend IndyCar-NASCAR sweep for Team Penske. Josef Newgarden earned his 20th career victory Saturday night at World Wide Technology Raceway outside of St. Louis. Kyle Larson finished third, and Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top five. The NASCAR Cup Series wraps up the regular season Saturday night at Daytona.
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz and left guard Quenton Nelson are set to return to practice Monday in a limited capacity. Both Wentz and Nelson underwent foot surgery three weeks ago, and their timetable to return was set at five to 12 weeks at that time. With the regular season opener still 20 days away, the team is optimistic both will suit up against the Seahawks. They’ll be joined at practice by center Ryan Kelly, who continues to recover from an elbow injury suffered earlier in training camp. The Colts have three camp practices remaining ahead of Friday’s preseason finale in Detroit. Coach Frank Reich said he has not decided whether Jacob Eason or Sam Ehlinger will start at quarterback against the Lions.
