Russell Wilson threw four touchdowns, and the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Indianapolis Colts 28-16 in the season opener at Lucas Oil Stadium. Indianapolis has lost in Week 1 eight straight years. New Colts quarterback Carson Wentz was sacked three times and hit 10 times. Even with the poor offensive line play, Wentz threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns, both to Zach Pascal, in his Colts debut. Wilson finished 18-for-23 with 254 yards and four scores. Tyler Lockett caught four passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns, including a 69-yarder just before halftime that put Seattle on top 21-10.
Alex Palou (Puh-Low) bounced back from an early race hole to win his third race of the season and regain the points lead in IndyCar’s Grand Prix of Portland. The 24-year-old Chip Ganassi Racing driver started on the pole, but was dropped to 16th after taking a shortcut to avoid an opening turn accident. He held off Alexander Rossi and teammate Scott Dixon on a pair of late race restarts to win at Portland International Raceway. Palou entered the day 10 points behind Pato O’Ward in the series standings, and now leads the championship hunt by 25 points with two races remaining.
Nolan Arenado hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and that’s all the offense St. Louis would need, as the Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Reds 2-0 at Busch Stadium. St. Louis took two out of three from their division rival, and the Cardinals are now one game back of the Reds and Padres for the final wild card spot in the National League. The San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 to complete a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field. After getting within a run in the seventh, the Cubs had the bases loaded with one out before ending the inning on a pair of strikeouts.
Leury Garcia launched a walk-off home run to center field, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Boston Red Sox 2-1 Sunday at Guaranteed Rate Field. Craig Kimbrel blew a save for Chicago before Garcia’s heroics with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. The Milwaukee Brewers dominated the Cleveland Indians 11-1, dropping Chicago’s magic number to clinch the AL Central to nine. Elsewhere in the division, Robbie Grossman drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th to give the Tigers an 8-7 comeback win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Minnesota Lynx pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat the Indiana Fever 90-80 Sunday night in Minneapolis. The Fever fell behind by 10 after the first quarter, but clawed back in the third to take a two point lead into the final 10 minutes. The Lynx pulled away in the fourth quarter, out-scoring Indiana 29-17. Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever with 25 points, while Teaira McCowan added 17 points and eight rebounds. Indiana has dropped four straight, and at 6-23 has the worst record in the WNBA.
