Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson and former Formula 1 veteran Romain Grosjean completed the Rookie Orientation Program for the Indianapolis 500 yesterday. IndyCar officials deemed that Johnson and Grosjean passed the test, despite the fact that rain left both a few laps from officially finishing the 40-lap program. Johnson would not yet commit to next year’s Indy 500, but said that he’s closer than he has ever been. Grosjean will try to qualify for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing with Andretti Autosport in the number 28 DHL Honda.
Indianapolis Colts punter Rigoberto Sanchez was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week yesterday. Sanchez punted four times for 200 yards, with two punts inside the 20-yard line in the Colts’ win 27-17 over the Dolphins. It is the first time in his career that Sanchez has been named conference player of the week. The Colts are 1-3 and will face the 3-1 Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football.
Chris Taylor blasted a two-run walk-off home run to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Wild Card game. The defending World Series champion Dodgers advanced to play the San Francisco Giants in the NL Division Series starting tomorrow, while the Cards’ season is over despite a spectacular September run. St. Louis jumped to the lead in the top of the first when Tommy Edman scored on a wild pitch. Justin Turner went deep in the fourth inning for L.A., and the game stayed tied until Taylor’s walk-off shot to left field.
The Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros open the American League Division Series Thursday afternoon in Houston. Brownsburg native Lance Lynn will start for Chicago opposite Lance McCullers Jr. for the Astros with first pitch at 4:07 p.m. Eastern from Minute Maid Park.
