Indiana held off St. John’s 76-74 Wednesday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Julian Champagnie (Sham-penny) missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds, and IU escaped with the victory after leading by 12 at halftime. Trayce Jackson-Davis led IU with 18 points and 10 rebounds; Race Thompson added 15, and freshman guard Tamar Bates scored 11 in the first half. The Red Storm chipped away at the lead after halftime, and it became a back-and-forth game throughout the majority of the second half. Champagnie finished with a game-high 32 for the Red Storm, which fell to 2-1. The contest was part of the Gavitt Tip Off Games pitting Big Ten and Big East teams. The All-American forward Jackson-Davis eclipsed one thousand career points in the second half. Indiana is 3-0 and the Hoosiers stay at home to play Louisiana Sunday night.

Michigan State defeated Butler 73-52 Wednesday night at a sold-out Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs shot just 29 percent from the field and 9-for-30 from 3-point range. The Spartans jumped out to a 22-8 lead in the first eight minutes and the Dawgs never got closer than six. Ty Groce led Butler with 15 points and eight rebounds, and Chuck Harris added 13. Butler big man Bryce Nze left in the first half with a shoulder injury and did not return. It was the first matchup between the schools since Butler defeated Tom Izzo and the Spartans in the 2010 Final Four at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Bulldogs are 3-1, and head to Las Vegas for the Maui Invitational. Butler takes on 15th ranked Houston Monday afternoon.
