Indiana used stellar first half defense and beat Louisiana 76-44 Sunday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers held Louisiana to just 14 first half points, and at one point, the Ragin’ Cajuns missed 25 straight field goal attempts. IU was led by Parker Stewart, who scored 16 points and hit 4-of-5 3-pointers. Trayce Jackson-Davis had 11 points and seven rebounds for Indiana, which held Louisiana to 19 percent shooting for the game, but turned it over 27 times. The Hoosiers were without three players. Senior guard Rob Phinisee was out with a leg injury, Trey Galloway sat out with a broken wrist, and freshman center missed the game due to a three-game suspension. Indiana is 4-0 and hosts Jackson State Tuesday.
Sixth-ranked Purdue rallied in the second half and beat number five Villanova 80-74 Sunday to win the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut. Purdue trailed by as many as 11 in the second half, but scored 39 points over the final 10 and a half minutes, and made its last seven field goals. Zach Edey scored 21 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead the Boilers, while Isaiah Thompson scored 12 and hit three crucial second half 3-pointers. Sophomore sensation Jaden Ivey had 10 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, and all five starters scored in double figures. The Boilers outscored the Wildcats 38-18 in the paint and outrebounded Villanova by 12. Matt Painter used ten players, while Jay Wright’s squad played seven and appeared tired down the stretch. Purdue is 5-0 and is off until Friday when the Boilers host Omaha at Mackey Arena.
Jonathan Taylor scored a franchise-record five touchdowns, and the Indianapolis Colts ran away with a 41-15 victory over the Buffalo Bills Sunday. The second-year running back ran 32 times and 185 yards and four touchdowns, and added a receiving touchdown, as the Colts won for the fifth time in six games. Taylor’s career day vaulted him into the MVP race and kept the Colts in the playoff contention in the AFC. Indy’s defense forced four turnovers, including three that led to touchdowns. The Colts raced out to a 14-0 lead, and took a 17-point advantage into halftime. Trailing 17-7, Buffalo fumbled on a kickoff return late in the half, and Taylor ran in a touchdown on the next play. Indianapolis had lost its last eight games against teams that made the playoffs last year, and the victory avenged a loss to the Bills in the Wild Card round in January. Taylor holds the NFL lead with 1,122 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. The Colts are 6-5 and host the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
For those Chicago Bears fans hanging on through this 3-7 season because they at least can watch rookie quarterback Justin Fields’ growth, Sunday’s 16-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens was like taking a helmet to the gut. Fields missed most of the second half at Soldier Field after suffering injured ribs, and his status is in question for Thursday’s game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. Bears coach Matt Nagy was typically evasive with his answers about Fields’ injury after the game.
He said he didn’t know if Fields’ ribs are broken, whether the injury happened on one play or was a result of several hits or if there is a chance Fields could recover in time for the Thanksgiving game.
The Indiana Pacers take on the Chicago Bulls Monday night at United Center. The Pacers snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over the lowly New Orleans Pelicans Saturday night at home. The Blue and Gold improved to 7-11 led by 20 points from Domantas Sabonis. Chicago is coming off a 109-103 victory over the Knicks Sunday night behind 31 points from DeMar DeRozan. The Bulls have won four out of five are 12-5 overall and 6-2 at home. The Central Division rivals get underway at 8 p.m. Eastern at the United Center.
