Purdue jumped three spots to number three in the college basketball AP Top 25 Monday. The Boilermakers beat North Carolina and Villanova over the weekend to improve to 5-0. Purdue is behind Gonzaga and UCLA, which face off Tuesday night in a 1-2 showdown. The number three ranking is Purdue’s highest since the 2017-18 season. Forward Caleb Furst was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after averaging 11.3 points and 6.7 rebounds in three games. The 2021 Indiana Mr. Basketball scored 12 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting in Sunday’s win over Villanova. Trevion Williams was named the co-Big Ten Player of the Week. He averaged 16.3 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench in Purdue’s three wins. The third-ranked Boilers host Omaha Friday at Mackey Arena.
The Indiana Pacers ran away with a 109-77 victory over the Chicago Bulls Monday night at United Center. Domantas Sabonis led a balanced Indiana effort with 21 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Malcolm Brogdon added 16, and Justin Holiday scored 14, as Indiana won its second in a row. All five Pacers starters scored in double figures in the first half, and they led by 21 at the break. The Blue and Gold improved to 8-11 and won their sixth straight in Chicago. Indiana outrebounded Chicago 59-38 and held the Bulls to 36.5 percent shooting. Chicago was on the second night of a back-to-back, and dropped to 12-6 overall. The Bulls were led by DeMar DeRozan’s 18 points. The Pacers host LeBron James and the Lakers Wednesday night and will play nine of their next ten at home, while the Bulls take on the Rockets Wednesday in Houston.
Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich said All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson is day-to-day with an ankle injury he reaggravated in Sunday’s win over over the Bills. Nelson left the 41-15 victory early with a right ankle injury that caused him to miss three games earlier this season. Reich said he thinks Nelson will fight through the pain and will not miss Sunday’s showdown with Tampa Bay. The Colts have won five out six and welcome Tom Brady and the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers to Lucas Oil Stadium.
