The 35-year-old Freeman will replace Brian Kelly, who left South Bend for LSU earlier this week after 12 seasons. Freeman joined the Fighting Irish staff as defensive coordinator in 2021 after a four-year stint at Cincinnati in the same position. Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees announced he is staying at Notre Dame. Both Freeman and Rees had been offered by Kelly to join him at LSU.

The Atlanta Hawks beat the Indiana Pacers 114-111 Wednesday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Pacers guard Chris Duarte appeared to be fouled on what would have been a go-ahead layup in the final seconds. No foul was called, and Trae Young hit two free throws with 1.2 seconds left to secure the victory for the Hawks. Indiana has lost three straight and four out of five. Malcolm Brogdon led the Blue and Gold with 27 points and nine assists. Former Pacers coach Nate McMillan did not coach the Hawks due to COVID-19 caution, but gets credit for his 700th career victory. Pacers guard Justin Holiday missed the game due to NBA health and safety protocols. Holiday had played in 250 straight games, which was the longest active streak in the league. The Pacers are 9-15, and their six-game homestand continues Friday night against the Miami Heat.
