The boys 7th grade Hatchets made quick work of the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon with a 70-20 win. Levi Burkemper lead a trio of players in double figures with 21 points followed by Aiden Boyd with 17 and Brody Armes with 10. Jack Brower had 8, Charlie Holtsclaw 7, Lyndon Evans 6 and Drew Jones 1. The 7th grade Hatchets are now 4-1 and play their first home game Monday night at 6:00pm in Jr High Gym vs Jasper.
The 8th grade remained perfect on the season with a 58-35 victory over the Wildcats at Mt Vernon. Cordell Turner poured in a game high 31 points to lead the way. Trey James added 10, Xavion Lesure 8, Brody Isza 6 and Cooper Wright 3. The 5-0 8th grade Hatchets will play Jasper on Monday night at 6:00 in the Hatchet House.
Washington placed 3rd out of 8 teams in the North Knox Wrestling Invitational on Saturday. All 9 wrestlers placed out of 14 weight classes.

The Indianapolis Colts dominated the Houston Texans 31-0 Sunday at NRG Stadium. Jonathan Taylor rushed a career-high 32 times for 143 yards and two touchdowns; his 10th straight game reaching the end zone. Colts cornerback Kenny Moore registered two takeaways on the first two Texans drives. The fifth-year cornerback intercepted the first pass of the game from Tyrod Taylor, and on the next possession forced a fumble, which was recovered by Xavier Rhodes. Indianapolis allowed just 141 yards of offense en route to its first road shutout since 1992. The Colts swept the season series from the Texans and improved to 7-6. Indianapolis is off next week before the final four-game stretch of the season. The Colts host the surging Patriots Saturday December 18th at home.
The Indiana Pacers will try to snap a four-game losing streak when they host the Washington Wizards at home Monday night. The Blue and Gold lost to the Miami Heat Saturday night to fall to 9-16. Washington has exceeded expectations so far this season. The Wizards are 14-10 coming off a loss to the Raptors Sunday night in Toronto. The Pacers lost to the Wizards by a point in overtime in the second game of the season. Pacers forward T.J. Warren remains out indefinitely. The 28-year-old has not played in nearly a calendar year due a foot injury. Coach Rick Carlisle said Warren continues to progress and has shown “continued healing,” but will not play this month. Indiana and Washington tip off at 7 p.m. Eastern at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Notre Dame will face Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Day. The Fighting Irish are 11-1 and finished fifth in the College Football Playoff rankings, one spot away from playing in a National Semifinal. Coach Marcus Freeman’s first game will come against ninth-ranked Oklahoma State, which is 11-2 after getting edged out by Baylor Saturday in the Big 12 title game. The Fiesta Bowl gets underway at 1 p.m. Eastern New Year’s Day from Glendale, Arizona. The CFP matchups include Alabama and Cincinnati in the Cotton Bowl, while Michigan and Georgia will square off in the Orange Bowl.
Purdue football will head to Nashville to play Tennessee in the Music City Bowl. The Boilermakers are 8-4, and are in search of their first nine-win season since 2003. The Music City Bowl is Thursday, December 30th, with kickoff at 3 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. Purdue’s most recent bowl appearance was a loss to Auburn in the 2018 Music City Bowl. Coach Jeff Brohm said Sunday night that star juniors David Bell and George Karlaftis will enter the NFL Draft and not return for their senior seasons, although their participation in the bowl game is to be determined. Tennessee is 7-5 under first-year coach Josh Heupel. Ball State will face Georgia State in the Camellia Bowl on Christmas Day.
Indiana is hiring former UMass head coach Walt Bell as offensive coordinator, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported Sunday night. Bell replaces Nick Sheridan, who was fired after two seasons as the Hoosiers’ offensive coordinator. Bell was fired as the UMass head coach last month after going 2-23 in just under three seasons. Prior to becoming a head coach, he served as the offensive coordinator at Florida State, Maryland and Arkansas State. IU quarterback Michael Penix entered the transfer portal earlier Sunday. Penix suffered season-ending injuries in each of his four years with the Hoosiers. The 6-foot-3 lefty was a second-team All-Big Ten selection in 2020 and has two years of eligibility remaining.
