The WJHS 7th grade boys basketball team fell to 8-4 on the season with a 26-22 loss to North Daviess. Aiden Boyd had 7 points followed by Drew Jones 5, Jack Brower and Levi Burkemper 4 and Caleb Bouchie 2. North Daviess 7th graded goes to 19 and 0 on the season. The 7th grade Hatchet boys return to action on Monday against Pike Central.
The 8th grade Hatchet boys (10-1) dropped their first game of the season 40-39 in overtime against North Daviess. Xavion Lesure had 21 points to pace the Hatchets. Cooper Wright added 7, Brody Isza 5, Cordell Turner 4 and Brody Clark 2. North Daviess will play at the Historic Hoosier Gym on Saturday at 9am against New Castle.
The Hatchets 5th grade black team fell to 5-3 Thursday night on a last second shot to Vincennes Rivet 30-29. The Hatchets were led by Dylan Stowers with 19 points. Drew Clawson scored 5, Hunter Newland had 3, and Noah Rhoads had 2. The Washington Hatchets 5th grade boys will play Saturday morning at 10:00 am at Griffith vs Jasper.
Trayce Jackson-Davis scored 27 points and Indiana beat 13th-ranked Ohio State 67-51 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers used a 13-0 run to pull away late and earn the first ranked win of the Mike Woodson era. The All-American forward added 12 rebounds and five blocks and made 11 of his 17 shots. Trey Galloway provided a spark off the bench for the Hoosiers in his first game since November 17th. The sophomore guard returned from a broken wrist and had eight points and two steals. Race Thompson added 11 for Indiana, which improved to 11-3 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten. IU held the Buckeyes to 30.8 percent shooting, and outscored Ohio State in the paint 38-10. The Hoosiers face Minnesota Sunday afternoon in Bloomington.
Butler is back home Friday night against 22nd-ranked Xavier. The Bulldogs are 8-5 after falling to Seton Hall earlier this week. Xavier enters Hinkle Fieldhouse 11-2, and the Musketeers are 5.5-point favorites. Xavier has not played since December 21st because of two postponements due to COVID-19 in opponents’ programs. It is the first matchup between the two programs since Butler overcame a 19-point deficit to beat Xavier by a point in the Big East Tournament in March. The Dawgs and Musketeers tip off at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Friday on FS1. The Big East announced Thursday that Butler’s game at Connecticut has been rescheduled for Tuesday, January 18th. The game was scheduled for New Year’s Day, but postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the UConn program.
The Indiana Pacers waived small forward Kelan (KEY-luhn) Martin Thursday. Martin’s 1.7 million dollar contract was slated to become guaranteed Friday. The 26-year-old Butler product has averaged 6.3 points per game in 27 games so far this season. Martin is currently in the NBA’s health and safety protocols due to COVID-19. The move opens up a roster spot for Indiana, which could be used to sign guard Lance Stephenson. The fan-favorite is currently on a 10-day deal, and scored 30 points in Wednesday night’s loss to the Brooklyn Nets. The Pacers have lost six games in a row, and host the Utah Jazz Saturday night.
