The man who was killed in a mining accident at Sunrise Coal in Oaktown has been identified.
The man’s name is Brian C. Rodriguez.
The incident happened Friday, and Rodriguez was identified publicly yesterday afternoon.
Rodriguez’s death was the first coal mine death in Indiana since September of 2018, when a person was killed at Bear Run Mine, in Sullivan County, which is operated by Peabody Energy.
That’s according to records from the U.S. Dept. of Labor, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, which keeps up-to-date records of mining fatalities on its website.
Neither the Knox County Sheriff’s Department nor Knox County Coroner Karen Donovan have commented on the incident.
So far, the details surrounding the incident and the cause of death are still unclear.
