One of Indiana’s largest utilities is dropping coal.
AES, formally Indianapolis Power and Light and parent company for AES Indiana, said it will stop burning coal by 2025.
The company says it’s been a goal to reduce coal emissions for years and that this move simply speeds that up.
AES is not saying what will become of its coal-fired power plant here in southern Indiana.
The plant in Petersburg provides electricity to half a million people across the state, including many in Indianapolis.
The plant has been scheduled to remain open through 2040.
